Kate Gosselin Makes Woman's Day

464C79AD-D986-4769-B6B1-49196F316E3F.jpg

Either you love Kate Gosselin and are amazed that she can keep it together in the face of twins and sextuplets or you're a judgmental heartless hag. At least, that's my personal exerience with Kate-haters judging from my Kate Gosselin, Time's Person of the Year
post.

There's an article in Woman's Day by Jennifer Rainey Marquez called How She does It: Kate Gosselin.

She's lived her unique motherhood experience on reality television and she's let you see all her flaws.

Her children have grow from babies and toddlers into full-on children at 4 and 7 years old.

Six 4 year olds people.

I find my one 6 year old daughter so challenging to raise that I actually have a blog to talk about it.

No wonder she needs a TV show.

The Gosselins have become our family experience and my children love their children. My 2 year old is as invested in those Gosselin Babies - yes, we still call them The Babies - as he is in Barney.

My daughter L-O-V-E-S those kids.

They love our family time watching them. Seriously it's about the only G rated thing left on television during prime time.

From the article: "This is a big year for you—the first that all eight kids are in elementary or preschool. Can you describe your typical routine getting the kids ready for school?"

"I’m all about planning ahead. Otherwise, I don’t know how I would function in the morning, because I am not a morning person! I pack the twins’—Cara and Mady’s—lunches the night before, so that everything’s ready to go the next day. I also lay out the little kids’ lunches in my mind. I’m always thinking: Can I turn that roast turkey into a turkey sandwich tomorrow morning? We live an hour from the preschool, so the little kids and I have to get a very early start."

"Who the hell drives their kids one hour away to attend preschool?" Not me. I'm annoyed that I live 15-20 minutes from Zack's preschool and as soon as there's an opening at the one in town I'm switching him. I don't care who's teaching it - it can't be worth 2 hrs a day in the car with 6 four year olds paying $3.50 a gallon for gas.

I'm not a Kate Gosselin kind of mother in a lot of ways. I'm not a germaphobe, I'm not anal-retentive or compulsive. I care what I eat and what I feed my kids, but I don't have the financial luxury of having an "organic-only" rule.

She makes the kids fun foods by turning them into checker boards and buys alphabet cookie cutters to make their initials out of food, according to the article. Yeah, I don't have time for that - I'm writing this blog. I also am wary of raising my children's expectations.

But, we do have one similar rule: I am not a restaurant. You eat what I make. I also throw in "I am not the maid. I am not your waitress."

Oh, well, watch the show and go read the magazine article yourself.

We watch this show here too. My 5 year old daughter loves it. I watch when I feel overwhelmed with my 6.5, 5 and 3.5 year old girls. It makes me feel better about the chaos here.

I don't know how she does it either, but it still makes me sad that she has to gripe at her husband when he does things imperfectly. I know it's not easy with even just three, but I really wish she'd cut her husband some slack. I mean, he tries at least.
He's doing the best he can. They both are. Her best is far better than his, but what he can give is far better than getting no help at all.

Perfectionist tendencies and high expectations can lead to a lot of hurt feelings and disappointment and possibly resentment. Even though I relate to her feelings a bit, I still cringe when I see her take jabs at her husband or if he criticizes her. They need each other and it's not helpful to be sniping at each other.

I do wish them well, though. I want to hear later on that they all grow up to be really happy kids, and the parents can finally relax a little and enjoy each other again.

I have watched very little of the show, but from what I've seen, I like her. I can't imagine what it's like to raise all those kids even with the help she gets.

I've noticed that when someone writes abour Kate over at B5, they end up with mass amounts of comments. People are so passionately for or against her.

She's a mom, like any mom, trying her best to raise her family. None of us have all the answers, but I'm always shocked when I read an especially angry response to Kate - some people feel she's evil. So weird to me.

We moms - we should lift each other up, not tear each other down. Sometimes I wonder if jealousy fuels some of the anti-Kate talk. Kate's opportunities don't take anything away from the simpler life my family lives. We are both good moms. :D

I enjoyed your post with it's lack of Kate-bashing.

I had no idea there were Kate haters. What is wrong with people? My kids and I love that show - and learn so much from it. (First, I think God every day that my fertility treatments did not give me sextuplets!) She gets a little rough with Jon sometimes, and bless his heart for grinning and bearing it. I think he has comrades on the camera crew - at least an outlet for his frustrations.

Anyway, haters stink. I am amazed at how well she juggles everything, even with help. Both parents are on the same page with making each child feel special. That is what the kids will remember.

Thanks for the post!

Yeah haters stink! Worse than Kate ever could. Like you I'm grateful I don't have to find out whether I could mother sextuplets.

The haters are just jealous. Most people would do exactly what the Gosselins have done, whether it is freebies, getting paid for episodes, etc... I'm sure at some point they will take a break from the show, but it would be cool to see how the kids are as teenagers. Anxious to know where their new home will be. Have heard rumors, but everyone knows how those are. By the way I love Kate's hair!

Read on some other site that their new home is 8,000 sq. feet, and its being paid for by sponsors. I know people will probably get upset by that, but who wouldn't take advantage of that? These sponsors will get advertising for quite awhile, and that can be quite expensive. Really don't know if its true about the size of the home, but thought it would be interesting to mention it, see what people say about it. I know I'd be all over it. I don't get why people get so upset with the parents. They do love their kids. The last episode talked about how they have discussed it (cameras around)with the kids, and at anytime will pull the plug if the kids are not benefitting, or are having trouble with it in some way. Also read where they live, people don't pay much attention to them and even some kids at the same school, don't even know they have a show. In addition, it seems the crew has become very close to the family, so the kids might not look at them as strangers, or their here working.

She has personal organic chef, an assistant, a housekeeper, and Jon basically takes care of the kids now that he is home full time. They also have 5 crew members at their house most of the time who also help out with watching the kids when they play outside. She is not exactly struggling for a helping hand. They get $65,000 an episode PLUS $25,000 for a speaking engagement, PLUS they pass around an offer basket for donations. They also charge $20 bucks for a pic and autograph after the speaking engagement. They get unlimited free clothes from Gap, Banana Republic and Gymboree, to name a few. Free vacations, paid trips to amusement parks and other public attractions, and basically anything else they do or want is paid for or given to them. She also didn't want Aunt Jodi to be paid for any time on the show, nor did she want Beth & Bob to be compensated - that's why they are no longer on the show. Way to show your gratitude, Kate! Yes, it's great that they get so many opportunities to show their kids a wonderful life, but this woman does not act like the Christian she claims to be...

Anne-

Where did you get those figures? Seems to me you're jealous of Kate and her family's good fortune. Keep in mind that that good fortune is God's way of making this couple able to raise these kids.

I have seen a lot of you say you couldn't raise multiples like Kate's, saying how just one is pretty challenging. Well this is the reason why Kate has her eight kids...God chose her because she CAN handle it. She's organized, a health professional, a Christian who believes and is teaching her kids the word of the Lord. I know a lot of you will attack me for saying this, but, please keep an open mind and perhaps pick up a Bible or attend a church service.

And, keep in mind...these episodes are all edited. So, you probably don't see some stuff as well as just seeing something that looks bad. The Gosselins are at the mercy of TLC editors.

Oh, I forgot to ask you Anne...

How do you know that it was Kate who didn't want Aunt Jodi and Bob and Beth to be compensated? Unless you're on the "inside", please let us know.

The Gap and all those other stores are sponsors of TLC. They are the ones who paid TLC to be featured and displayed on the Gosselins. So, if you have a problem that they get free clothes, in the words of Mady, "get over it". Your beef should be with TLC, who probably would dismiss it as they have a business to operate.
